Espresso work-table island

A freestanding kitchen island in espresso-brown paint on four square legs, under a 40mm hard maple butcher-block top that overhangs 370mm at the back for stools. Three wide drawers run under the top, a slatted maple pot shelf sits low between the legs, and brass towel rails cross each end.

• End-grain checkerboard butcher block A 450 x 360mm end-grain butcher block in an eighty-square checkerboard of hard maple and black walnut, 40mm thick, with stopped juice grooves down both long sides and finger recesses coved into each end. The end grain takes a knife edge between its fibres instead of across them, so blades stay sharp longer and cuts close up; silicone feet lift it 10mm so it never slides, rocks or sits in a puddle.
• Maple coffee station A pale hard maple coffee station: an appliance garage with black walnut doors hides the espresso machine on a walnut counter, under an open lit shelf for cups, between two slim glass-door towers for mugs and beans, over drawers and cupboards.
• Cherry board with a sloped crumb well An edge-grain cherry board, 500 x 300 x 32mm, with two maple pinstripes and a shallow well carved into one end whose floor slopes 12mm down toward the end wall. Sweep chopped onion or bread crumbs down the slope and they gather in the well instead of skittering across the counter, then tip straight into the pan; a coved finger lift under the far end picks it up off a flat worktop.
