A wall-to-wall headboard of wide oiled oak planks with shadow gaps, on furring battens into the studs and a pine sole plate faced in oak, capped by a ledge for a glass of water and a book. Two oak nightstands with a drawer each hang on French cleats either side of the bed, so the floor under them stays clear for slippers and the vacuum, and two black swing-arm lights are screwed to the planks above them.

• Walnut nightstand pair A pair of mid-century nightstands in oiled black walnut, one each side of the bed: a slim drawer with a brushed brass edge pull over an open shelf for books, on four square legs, under a thicker top with a soft rounded edge. Small enough to build in a weekend, and they lift a bedroom on their own.
• Cherry window-sill desk A floating cherry desk that carries the window sill out into the room: its top sits level with a 760mm sill so the sill becomes the back of the desk, and two slim drawers hang beneath on concealed steel plates and a rail into the studs, with nothing on the floor. It turns the brightest spot in a small bedroom into a 1400 x 460mm workspace without giving up an inch of the walls either side.
